Review: The Bacta War

Good:

In this book Rogue Squadron fights a private war against Ysanne Isard, and ironically it finances it with the money Isard used to frame Tycho.

Very nice were the individually painted X-wings, and that the New Republic surplussed out the X-wings because of missing parts (read pilots *g*). I very much liked Tycho's "Return" to Alderaan; by this the destruction of Alderaan became much more personal to me, as I learned someting about the people who lived there and died with their planet.

My favorite new character is Booster Terrik. It was to be expected that he would appear sooner or later, and his interaction with Corran is great.Funny was the Alderaannian war frigate that believed Tycho's X-wing to be the Another Chance (I don't know why, but I always have to snicker when I imagine a large warship floating before a little X-wing expectingly, waiting for orders).

The connection to the comic "Battleground Tatooine" is done well. If you don't know the comic (as I did when first reading the book) there isn't much you don't understand (differently from "Isard's Revenge"); if you've read it, it is a nice addition.

I very much liked the idea that Tycho and Corran killed Isard with the same strategy they had to develop in "Rogue Squadron" due to Tycho's status as suspected traitor.

Bad:

In this book Isard acts completely irrational and illogical. Otherwise Rogue Squadron wouldn't have had a chance in this fight David versus Goliath. It was very hard to believe anyway that twelve pilots can be successful against a fleet of three star destroyers and the forces of a planet (even with the support from the New Republic and others).

To have Bror Jace back alive was unnecessary for the story. I don't like characters returning from the dead; one or two times it might be a nice plot twist, but Stackpole really overuses it, and in this case it was pointless anyway. One thing I like about the X-wing series is the fact that main characters can die. But if they do, they should stay dead.

General:

This book would rank very high on my list of favorite books if Isard wouldn't act so irrationally.

Gut:

Rogue Squadron kämpft in diesem Buch auf eigene Faust gegen Ysanne Isard und finanziert diesen Kampf ironischerweise mit dem Geld, das Isard auf Tychos Konten deponiert hatte, um ihn als Verräter darzustellen.

Nett fand ich die Ausinventarisierung der X-wings durch die Neue Republik aufgrund fehlender Teile (sprich: Piloten *g*) und die bunt bemalten Flugzeuge. Sehr gut gefallen hat mir Tychos „Return“, weil dadurch die Zerstörung Alderaans für mich „persönlicher“ wurde, man erfährt etwas über einige der Menschen, die dort gestorben sind.

Der beste neue Charakter ist Booster Terrik. Mit dessen Auftauchen war ja schon die ganze Zeit zu rechnen, und seine Szenen mit Corran sind einfach klasse. Witzig fand ich auch das alderaanische Kriegsschiff, das Tychos X-wing für die „Another Chance“ hält (ich weiß nicht warum, aber ich muß immer kichern, wenn ich mir das Bild eines großen Kriegsschiffes vorstelle, das erwartungsvoll vor einem kleinen X-wing schwebt und auf Befehle wartet).

Die Verbindung zu den Comics („Battleground: Tatooine“) war gut gelungen; wenn man den Comic nicht kennt, stört es das Verständnis des Buches eigentlich nicht (anders als bei „Isard’s Revenge“), wenn man ihn kennt, ist es nettes zusätzliches Element.

Eine gute Idee fand ich, daß Corran und Tycho zum Schluß Isard gemeinsam mit der Taktik zur Strecke bringen, die sie notgedrungen in „Rogue Squadron“ entwickeln mußten.

Schlecht:

Isard handelt in diesem Buch vollkommen irrational und unlogisch. Ansonsten hätte Rogue Squadron in diesem Kampf David gegen Goliath auch keine Chance gehabt, es war so schon schwer zu glauben, daß zwölf Piloten gegen mehrere Star Destroyer erfolgreich sein können (trotz Unterstützung durch die Neue Republik und andere).

Die Rückkehr von Bror Jace zu den Lebenden war meiner Meinung nach überflüssig; es hat zur Handlung nichts beigetragen. Ich mag es allgemein nicht, wenn die Charaktere, die man für tot hält, dann doch putzmunter wieder auftauchen; ein- oder zweimal kann man das machen, aber Stackpole übertreibt da wirklich. Und für mich macht es gerade einen Reiz der X-wing-Reihe aus, daß auch Hauptcharaktere sterben können; nur sollten sie es dann auch wirklich tun.

Allgemein:

Das Buch wäre ganz weit oben auf meiner Rangliste der X-wing-Bücher, wenn Isard nicht so eine jämmerliche Figur abgeben würde.
