Review: Solo Command

Good:

I very much liked the relationship between Lara and Myn, from the first approach to the open end. The Rogues are back (with the effect of course that there are many characters in this book; you really need the "Dramatis Personae") . SC is the only book of the X-wing series in which a main character from the movies, Han Solo, plays a major role, and I think Allston wrote Han very well. I especially like the relationship between Han and Wedge, for example in the two scenes when both are together in the "Millenium Falsehood". Another positive point is the cooperation with Admiral Rogriss, finally a reasonable Imperial again.

Some of my favorite scenes (there are too many to list them all):
- Tycho protects Wedge with his life
- the "boot scene"
- Elassar tries to attach good luck charms to Runt's X-wing
- Wes and Hobbie "accompany" Wedge to his date
- the conversation between Wes and Myn ("You can't look dignified when you're having fun.")

Bad:

The appearance of Tetran Cowall in the end was unnecessary. The galaxy isn't that small, and that another ex-actor is such a good pilot is hard to believe.

A small thing I noticed and didn't like is the fact that in the sim between Wedge and Tycho on one side and Lara and Face on the other Tycho is shot down. As an ex-Imp he should be a better TIE pilot than Wedge. Still it is very much possible that he is shot down in this particular sim, no doubt about it, but in all of the books Wedge is never shot down (instead poor Tycho as his wingman often is). Sure Wedge is the best pilot, but no one is that good. This simulator scene would have been a good opportunity to show that Wedge isn't invulnerable.

The laws of the New Republic seem to be very strange. On one hand Dr. Gast gets a life sentence(!) for smuggling (well, not even smuggling, just bringing along) half a miliion Imperial credits into Coruscant. No that she doesn't deserve it, but it is very harsh. On the other hand I find it hard to imagine that there is no change for Lara; even when someone is accused of treason, his/her later actions should be considered as mitigating circumstances (though I have no idea how this is handled in real world jurisdiction).

General:

"Solo Command" is my second-favorite X-wing and generally Star Wars book (after "Starfighters of Adumar"). As in all of Aaron Allston's X-wing books, I like the great mixture of funny and sad/dramatic scenes.

Gut:

Gut gefallen hat mir die Beziehung von Lara und Myn, von den ersten Annährungsversuchen bis zum offenen Ende. Die Rogues sind wieder dabei (obwohl es dadurch natürlich sehr viele Charaktere gibt, da braucht man dann wirklich die Übersicht „Dramatis Personae“, die in dem englischen Buch drin ist). Dies ist das einzige Buch der X-Wing-Reihe, in dem einer der Hauptcharaktere aus den Filmen, nämlich Han Solo, eine wichtige Rolle spielt, und ich finde, Allston hat Han sehr gut geschrieben. Besonders gefällt mir das Verhältnis von Han und Wedge, z.B. in den beiden Szenen, wo sie zusammen in der Millenium Falsehood sitzen. Positiv finde ich auch die Zusammenarbeit mit Admiral Rogriss, endlich mal wieder ein vernünftiger Imperialer.

Einige meiner Lieblingsszenen (es gibt zuviele, um sie alle aufzuzählen):
- Tycho beschützt Wedge mit seinem Leben
- die "Stiefelszene"
- Elassar versucht, Talismane an Runts X-Wing anzubringen
- Wes und Hobbie "begleiten" Wedge zu seinem Rendezvous
- das Gespräch zwischen Wes und Myn ("You can't look dignified when you're having fun.")

Schlecht:

Ziemlich überflüssig fand ich das Auftauchen von Tetran Cowall am Schluß: so klein ist die Galaxie nun auch wieder nicht, und daß noch ein Ex-Schauspieler ein so hervorragender Pilot ist, finde ich dann doch sehr unglaubwürdig.

Eine kleinere Sache, die mir nicht so gut gefallen hat, ist, daß in der Sim, in der Wedge und Tycho gegen Face und Lara fliegen, Tycho abgeschossen wird; als Ex-Imperialer müßte er ein besserer TIE-Pilot als Wedge sein. Mir gefällt dabei nicht, daß generell in allen Büchern Wedge nie abgeschossen wird; klar ist er der beste Pilot, aber so gut ist niemand; und stattdessen erwischt es immer den armen Tycho, weil der als Wedges Flügelmann fliegt. In dieser Simulator-Szene hätte man mal ohne Probleme zeigen können, daß auch Wedge als Pilot nicht unfehlbar ist.

Die Gesetzgebung der Neuen Republik finde ich recht seltsam: zum einen landet Dr. Gast lebenslang(!) im Gefängnis, nur weil sie eine halbe Million imperiale Credits nach Coruscant eingeführt hat; nicht daß ich es ihr nicht gönnen würde, aber das finde ich doch recht heftig. Auf der anderen Seite kann ich nicht ganz glauben, daß es keine Chance der Rehabilitation für Lara gibt; auch bei jemandem, der des Hochverrats angeklagt wird, sollten dessen spätere Handlungen mildernd berücksichtigt werden (wobei ich keine Ahnung habe, wie das in der deutschen oder amerikanischen Rechtsprechung geregelt ist).

Allgemein:

"Solo Command" ist mein zweitliebstes X-Wing- und allgemein Star Wars-Buch (gleich nach "Starfighters of Adumar"). Wie eigentlich bei allen SW-Büchern von Aaron Allston gefällt mir besonders die gelungene Mischung aus lustigen und traurigen/dramatischen Szenen.
